La Union, 2 - Bacnotan

…continued from La Union, 1.

The church is reached after a short brief orange tricycle ride from the highway into a wide open space that is the church compound where at the center, the imposing church of San Miguel Archangel is built and bounded by centuries old fence. When I was there last week, workers were busy doing landscape work at the front of the church.

From what I saw in Fr. Galende’s Angels in Stone book, published 1996, I was a bit disappointed that now, this edifice already sported a modern portico that is just way off, its yellowish incongruence to the ancient facade marring a once beautiful structure.

The two massive belltowers at the facade’s flanks are newly repaired with parts of it reinforced with concrete after the earthquake of 1990 did much damage. Even until now, the cracks, reminders of that unfortunate day, are still evident.

The Christ statue infront seems to be a recent addition. Its close proximity to the facade makes it impossible to make a photo that excludes this even with an ultrawide angle lens.
